Switching Credit Card

Credit card borrowers should switch in time - Telegraph: "According to new research by MoneyExpert.com, more than 72 cards now charge standard rates of 17.9pc or higher compared with just 59 doing so in February. Some charge more than 40pc — for example, the BA Amex Premium Plus at 43.5pc and Ultima from Citibank at 41.2pc. With increasing numbers of people finding it difficult to make ends meet as the cost of living rises, it is essential to make sure that, if you do have to turn to credit, you are getting the best deal possible."

Why a prepaid card is a boon for travellers | This is Money

Prepaid travel cards can be cheap, they "no longer charge for the card, putting more money on to it, paying for purchases or a monthly fee. These include those from CaxtonFX, Tesco, Travelex and FairFX, which normally costs £9.95 to buy but is free through moneysupermarket.com.

They all charge for withdrawing money from an overseas ATM. The cheapest is FairFX at €1.50 (£1.25), while Travelex charges €3.75 (£3.12) and the Post Office is £2 plus 2.75% of the amount withdrawn.

Watch out for the exchange rate you get with the card. It claims the best rates, but CaxtonFX guarantees to give you the best exchange rate on the day - if you can find a cheaper one elsewhere, CaxtonFX will refund you the difference."

Prepaid credit cards

Prepaid credit cards are rising in popularity: "An increasing number of consumers are turning to prepaid credit cards during the current economic climate, according to a finance website.

Research by Fairinvestment.co.uk revealed that there are currently around 2.3 million prepaid credit card holders in the UK and it predicts this figure will rise to seven million by 2010 as people realise the benefits of having a prepaid credit card.

'You top up the card with money and then use it to pay for goods, safe in the knowledge that you can never go overdrawn or into debt,' said Phil Alcock of Fairinvestment.co.uk.

With the holiday season upon us, families can use prepaid credit cards abroad in order to monitor their spending.

'Prepaid cards can be used just as a normal credit card, so on holiday, you can use the card to pay for meals out, activities, petrol for the hire car and to withdraw cash,' added Mr Alcock.

The prepaid credit card market will be worth £4.5 billion by 2010, according to Fairinvestment.co.uk"

The new ThinkPad range will be available from the 4 August 2008 and it is thought that this will expand to include other notebooks later in 2008.

Vodafone say that customers connecting outside the UK won't be caught with high roaming charges either. It costs just £8.50 a day for unlimited connection and data around Europe, USA and Japan."

What broadband speeds could the UK copper loop manage?

thinkbroadband :: What broadband speeds could the UK copper loop manage?: "In an ideal world replacement of the copper local loop would happen in the next couple of years, but even the recent £1.5bn programme from BT suggests that the copper local loop is to largely remain. Ofcom has published a paper titled 'Assessment of the theoretical limits of copper in the last mile' which gives some idea of what is in theory possible over the existing infrastructure."

Are you mobile or fixed?

BBC NEWS | dot.life | A blog about technology from BBC News | Broadband - are you mobile or fixed?: "Dropping into a mobile phone shop, I was promised what sounded an amazing deal. The salesman wrote down for me what one of his firm's dongles would give me - 7.2Mbps for just £15 a month, if I signed up to an 18 months contract. No 'up to ' - just the full 7.2Mbps.
Naturally, I questioned the salesman a little more closely. Just how good was their 3g network in my area? 'Very good', he claimed - amongst the best areas in the country. Seeing as the deal was nine pounds a month cheaper than the fixed line contract I had just signed, I agreed to take the dongle."

How to Choose the Best Broadband Deal

When selecting the best deal please also check whether or not the provider will charge a connection fee and if there are any costs associated with being provided a wireless router. These additional costs can all mount up and you may be left with little savings when compared to other packages.

which broadband to choose???

When you are looking for the best deal price should not be the only factor. Many broadband providers will market a very low entry package to tempt potential customers over to them. When packages are very low in price please make sure you find out what speed the broadband package will provide, what download allocation you will be provided with and also the length of the contract. The download allocation is important as many providers will charge you per Gigabyte that you go over, so if your package has an 8GB download allocation and you download 10 movies that month, you are more than likely to have downloaded 10GB (i.e. 1GB per movie) – that is 2GB’s over your allocation, and that is 2GB worth of downloads the provider may bill over and above your monthly package cost.
